In 1984 Yugoslavia became the first socialist state to host a Winter Olympic Games.
They were the first games held under the Presidency of Juan Antonio Samaranch who would later famously announce Sydney as hosts of the 2000 Summer Games.
Only a decade after the Winter Games Sarajevo would be torn apart by war.
The breakup of the former Yugoslavia left the Winter Olympic venues looking haunting to say the least.
Reuters photographer Dado Ruvic went to Sarajevo and took these unbelievable photos of what the Winter Olympic venues look like now.
1. The 1984 mascot ‘Vucko’ can still be seen on the walls
2. The ground view of the ski jump
3. The athletes’ hotel
4. The bobsled track
5. The judges stand
6. The medal podium
7. Rotting and abandoned ski jumps
It’s sad to think that this is all that’s left from was one of the world’s biggest and brightest sporting events only a little over thirty years ago.
